55th North Carolina Infantry, Company A

55th North Carolina Infantry, Company A
[men listed for this company are primarily from Wilson County, NC, unless otherwise indicated]

55th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina, in May, 1862. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Pitt, Wilson, Wilkes, Cleveland, Burke, Catawba, Johnston, Alexander, Onslow, Franklin, and Granville. The unit served in the Department of North Carolina, then moved to Virginia where it was assigned to General J.R. Davis’ and Cooke’s Brigade. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Gettysburg to Cold Harbor, served in the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and took part in the Appomattox operations. The regiment lost thirty-one percent of the 640 engaged at Gettysburg and fifty-nine percent of the 340 at The Wilderness (including my gg grandfather James Henry Bell, Sr.). It surrendered [at Appomottox Court House, with 4 officers and 77 men alive on April 9, 1865. The field officers were Colonel John K. Connally; Lieutenant Colonels Alfred H. Belo, Abner S. Calloway, and Maurice T. Smith, and Major James S. Whitehead. [Editor’s Note: a good number of additional men in this company survived the war, beyond the “4 officers and 77 men” described above. For example, a number of the officers “resigned” and, if this company is like so many others I have researched, a few of the men imprisoned were exchanged late in the war and thus not at Appomattox. When the abstracting of their full, published military records is complete a more accurate survival figure will be available. Finally, a number of men who were deserters or changed sides, joining the armed forces of the United States, survived the war as well.]
