Enlisted in Wilson Count on 4 June 1861, for the war, at age 25. HOSPITALIZED at Richmond, VA on 18 Oct 1861 with “typhoid fever” and DIED on 10 Nov 1861 at age 25.

His full name is Jesse SUMMERLIN, age 24, a mechanic with a Personal Estate of $50; living in Joyners and Gardner’s District, Post Office: Joyner’s Depot, Wilson County, NC. He has two daughters ages 8 and 4 as well as two sons age 3 and 11 months. HIS DEATH, IN A RICHMOND HOSPITAL IN 1861, RESULTED IN A 17 YEAR OLD WIFE, PROBABLY HIS SECOND WIFE, NOT HAVING A HUSBAND AND HIS FOUR CHILDREN, UNDER AGE 9, NOT HAVING A FATHER.
LIKE SO MANY NONCOMMISSIONED MEN HIS SURNAME IS NOT SPELLED CORRECTLY IN THE MILITARY RECORDS.
