Gray TAYLOR, Private. 5th North Carolina Infantry, Company G.

Born in Wilson County where he enlisted on 10 June 1861, for the war, at age 32. Present or accounted for until discharged at Richmond, VA on 16 Aug 1862 by reason of “hepatitis” and “sciatica.”

In the United States Census of 1860, Gray TAYLOR is listed as a 34 year old Day Laborer living in Wilson District; Post Office: Wilson. No declarable income. In terms of kin he has a 34 year old wife; sons age 14, 12, 5 and 2 months and daughters age 7 and 2. HIS DEATH, IN A RICHMOND HOSPITAL IN 1862, RESULTED IN A 35 YEAR OLD WIFE WITHOUT A HUSBAND AND SIX CHILDREN, UNDER 16, WITHOUT A FATHER.

Place and date of enlistment not reported. WOUNDED: in the leg and captured at Gettysburg, PA on 1-3 July 1863. LEG AMPUTATED. DIED on 10 July 1863. NO REPORT OF THE SPECIFIC DAY HE WAS CAPTURED; WHICH LEG WAS AMPUTATED AND WHERE WOUNDED; OR, THE PLACE AND CAUSE OF HIS DEATH!
